The
road to Cape Tribulation is sealed, however be aware of the speed
restrictions - mostly 50km - and the serious speed bumps designed to slow
traffic in the Cassowary habitat - don't be in any hurry, wind down the
windows and listen to the beautiful bird songs as you pass under the lush
rainforest canopy.
If you are travelling north of Cape Tribulation to Cooktown up the Bloomfield Track (coast road) you need a four wheel drive vehicle and you must advise car rental people of your plans*. Those who wish to travel in a commercial vehicle to Cooktown can do so on the inland highway via Mossman. *Conditions
apply on car hire for Northern Queensland coast roads, please contact
Avis for full details.
Self drive lets you take more time as you drive yourself to Cape Tribulation / Daintree to take in the wonderful Daintree River Cruise, Cooper Creek Crocodile cruise, enjoy a tropical fruit ice-cream delight at Daintree Ice Cream Company, take in the Marrdja Boardwalk, marvel at the Coral Sea views from Alexander Range lookout, take a Mt Sorrow hike or partake in tasting many rare tropical fruits at a fruit tasting. If you have a 4WD you can go to Emmagen or otherwise you can take a daily 4WD tour from Cape Tribulation through the Daintree rainforest up the famous Bloomfield Track to Bloomfield Falls and Cooktown. Following
very heavy rains the concreted creek causeways on the northern
side of the Daintree River can be impassable in an ordinary vehicle and
also four wheel drive vehicles. If you are uncertain as to the safe depth
of water to cross wait and ask an experienced local driver or tour bus
operator.
The creeks normally subside after an hour or two following heavy rains. For road conditions elsewhere in Queensland phone the Royal Automobile Club Qld (RACQ) 24 hours on 1300 130 595 for the cost of a local call or access their website for updates at www.racq.com.au which suggests alternative routes where available. |
